Memento Mori
Imagine having only 365 days left on this earth. With what you already have, how would you spend that whole year? YouTube Gamer Mark Fischbach (or Markiplier) and Ethan Nestor (or CrankGamePlays) are friends that created a new YouTube channel together on November 13th, 2019. They called it "Unus Annus," which stands for "One Year." Ethan represented himself as "Unus" while Mark represented the "Annus" persona. The concept of this channel was how they would spend every day with only one year left to live.
They posted a video per day, celebrating each day of their lives with what they had. Their first official video titled "Unus Annus" introduced the channel and its purpose. Their last video was a 12-hour live stream titled "GoodBye." This was intense for their fans because after the year-long journey they experienced with Unus Annus, once the clock struck midnight on November 14th, 2020 (One year later), Unus and Annus passed away.
The entire YouTube channel and every single video posted was taken down and were completely deleted. This was emotional for Anus Annus and all the fans because you could not look back at any videos since the fans were a part of this one-year journey.
Unfortunately, if we're not a part of Unus Annus's journey between 2019 to 2020, you will not be able to share that experience with fans that followed the channel's series from the very beginning because everything is gone and is dead.
When Anus Annus had 100 days left on earth, they shared a message to their fans, "This will be our final message to you. A final reminder of what you already know. The end is coming, and you don't need us to hold your hand anymore. You've grown so much this year, and the end isn't to be feared anymore... We will always be with you in your memories... Time always seems to be fast when it's running out."
I will never forget the memories Unus Annus has given me, and neither will 4.6 million other fans. Their videos were filled with so many different emotions and gave fans time to reflect on their own lives and choices in life. Unus Annus lived by the phrase, "Memento Mori." This phrase is Latin, meaning "remember you must die." This phrase is the basic idea that death is inevitable and you have opportunities in life to fulfill.
The memory of Unus Annus is bitter-sweet. Although Unus and Annus are dead, Mark and Ethan are still alive and creating videos for their own personal YouTube channels. You can find Mark's channel here and Ethan's here.
Although Unus Annus is gone forever, other users try to upload Unus Annus videos, but they eventually get taken down for copyright. It is also disrespectful to the creators and fans. If you have not seen Unus Annus, you can try looking at reposted videos, but it will never be the same as what it truly was when they were alive.
The clock is ticking; what will you make of it? Memento Mori to you all.
