The day I moved to New York City was both the most heartbreaking and the most freeing I have ever felt.

Move-In Day

I would say the day started out like any other, but that's really not true. A week before I moved I rented a car, packed it FULL, left my boyfriend and our life in the Mountain West, and made my trek across the country. I remember the day like it was yesterday (though it really was only 2 months ago) - it had been raining for a week straight, but luckily my little brother joined along for the ride. Still downpouring, we crossed the New York state line and I was immediately greeted with overwhelming excitement that coursed through my body. I had been dreaming of this for as long as I can remember, and here I was making it a reality.

Seeing the City

The rush and adrenaline didn't leave my body the entire day. Further down the road and closer to the city, the trees cleared and the traffic picked up. All of a sudden, we glanced to the right, and there, in all its glory, was the most beautiful skyline I've ever seen. I swear I stopped breathing and then, the tears. I couldn't stop crying. Why was I crying? I was so incredibly happy to be doing this, but the circumstances stood and I remembered everything I just left behind. I tried to brush this off and eventually, there was no time for tears. Cars left and right, honking and speeding and pushing their ways through. Thank god I don't have to worry about driving in this chaos forever.

Settling In

I was fortunate enough to find an apartment with an elevator which made the move-in process a breeze. Did I just sign the lease the day before? You betcha. Was that going to stop me from getting cozy and making this place a home? Absolutely not. We pulled up on my street, struggled to find parking (of course), and finally settled on flashing the hazards just to unload the car. After what felt like an eternity in the gross heat and humidity, we did it. I did it! I made it to New York City and just like that, I had a new life for myself. I wouldn't trade this experience for anything in the world. I am home.
