So many pets but not ours...

Saying my Fiancé and I are animal lovers would be an understatement. At our current household we have three horses, four cats, two dogs, a handle full of fish, six chickens, and four Guineafowls; But, something was missing for Chelsea and me. We have all these animals in our home, but none to actually call our own. All of the animals at our house, besides one cat, are owned by my Fiancés parents. So, we decided it was time for us to get a pet we truly could call our own.

Finding the right one

Chelsea and I had to think thought about the potential animal we would want, as well as for deciding if we would buy a newborn animal or adopt an animal. We knew if we wanted a newborn, it would take a lot of work. Chelsea and I being full-time college students, who work multiple hours in a week, knew that between all of those daily tasks, a newborn animal would be too much to handle. After days of talking and looking at potential animals, we finally found her, a year and a half old female Pitbull named, ‘Minnie’, on a Pitbull rescue page. We both have always dreamed of owning a Pitbull, so as soon as we saw ‘Minnie’, it truly was love at first sight for Chelsea and me. Knowing this is the dog we really want, we decided to start the adoption application process as soon as we found her. Although we really didn’t know anything about her and only getting to see an image of her, we could just feel something attracting her to us; we just knew.

Getting the one for us

The process started by filling out a lot of paperwork about our personal information and any other animals that will be living at the home. On ‘Minnie's adoption page it mentioned she is only good in small groups of no more than one dog. This being a problem for us, lied on her application and stated we only had one dog. Looking back at this, it could have been a major issue if she truly wasn’t good with this size group, but it all worked out better than we could imagine. After our application was filled out and approved to move forward, we had to do a video chat, so the Rescue Center could approve our living arrangement for her; we did end up getting approved fully. One thing I should note before we even met ‘Minnie’ we decided to rename her to, ‘Eleanor Rigby’ (Yes, she is named after a Beatles song) or Ellie for short.

Bringing her home

Now that we had finished all the tasks we need to complete and get approved for, it was time we brought our girl home. Ellie’s Rescue Center was located just north of the Twin Cities, however, she and many other rescue dogs were coming from Texas. So, there were a few delays caused by the shuttle they were using; It had to broke down halfway to the destination. We finally received the message we had been waiting for, it was time to come and bring her home. Her shuttle would be arriving late at night, but we were told to be there at 10:00 P.M. to continue filling out information and collect any items, such as collars, leashes, food, and water. The dogs would arrive in their shuttle, all but a few were barking beyond belief. Since there were so many dogs, it took an additional half-hour for us to finally meet Ellie. We weren’t quite sure how our first meeting would go with her. Prior to getting Ellie off the shuttle, we had paid attention to all of the dogs coming off. Seeing how those dogs reacted, barking, trying to run away, just scared of the world around them. We were so nervous or girl wouldn’t like us and act as the other dogs did, but it went so much better than Chelsea and I could have imagined. She wasn’t barking or going Bezek like many of the other dogs, the only downside was you could tell she had gone bathroom on herself throughout the trip. She was very well behaved and showed her excitement by wiggling her back and tail like crazy. We have now had her for over a year and she is just as good as the day we got her. She rarely if ever barks, only when she is scared or when she doesn’t know who you are. Ellie Is great with anyone and everyone, she is usually very shy at first, but once she opens up to you she will love you like anyone else.

It’s easy to not forget about the time we got Ellie, she is hands down the best dog I have ever had
