A Coffee Lover's Journey Through Kona

Kona, Hawaii is truly a sight to behold. Kona is truly a coffee lover's paradise beyond the gorgeous views, national parks, and vast beaches. If money and a job weren't things in the world, I'd travel to Kona over and over again, if only to experience every coffee farm it has to offer.

Kona's Coffee Changed My Life

No, really. Experiencing fresh Kona coffee during my trip to Hawaii's Big Island truly changed my perspective on coffee. Not only was I enjoying sampling various types of coffee with luxurious views, but I was also touring family-owned farms and learning about the process and specialties behind this exceptional coffee.

Yes, Kona coffee comes with a price tag that might leave you wondering why it's so unique and if the cost is worth it. The answer is yes.

Hala Tree Coffee

My coffee journey started at Hala Tree Coffee. Greeted by friendly faces, you are immediately shown where the coffee samples are. After grabbing your coffee samples, you're off on a tour of the farm. Through rows of coffee plants, the tour guide explains to you what makes Kona coffee so unique. Kona's nutrient-rich volcanic soil, humid and sunny, and elevated environment makes for special beans and an unparalleled environment to grow them in.

After enjoying the views through a vast layout of trees, you are taken to where beans get sorted. Though the coffee isn't brewed here, the smell of coffee fills your senses. Guides walked me through the process of soaking and drying beans and explained how this process would later determine the strength of the coffee beans.

The coffee itself was highly flavorful. Somehow strong and airy at the same time, this is some of the smoothest coffee I have ever had to drink. Coffees ranged from earthy to floral. Hala Tree Coffee was indeed the highlight of my Kona coffee experience. Still, quite a few farms were runners-up, and I would highly recommend adding these to your Hawaiian coffee adventure.

A Kona coffee tour makes for a great family or couples trip, and it is truly a one-of-a-kind experience. Take that week off work, and treat yourself to a vacation that you will remember for years to come.
